Christians in the western Indian state of Goa hailed the arrest of a popular YouTuber who angered the community by allegedly calling St. Francis Xavier a “terrorist” among other things.

Church leaders welcomed the arrest but asked Christians to allow the law to take its course. 

“The law should take its own course and strong and exemplary punishment should be given to the accused responsible for this hate speech,” Father Barry Cardozo, director of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman’s Center for Social Communications Media, told UCA News.

There has been a campaign in Christian media against India's attempt to resist Christian tactics. I think maybe the Indian government is buckling.

Union of Catholic Asian News, April 21, 2026, "Indian police charge Hindu over St. Francis Xavier remarks." 

State Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told the media on April 20 that police were persuing charges of hurting Christians’ religious sentiments against  Gautam Khattar, who reportedly said the 16th-century Spanish Jesuit was a terrorist.

Khattar, a popular YouTuber, was addressing an April 18 meeting organized by a Hindu group in Vasco da Gama, a port town in the state. Also present on the stage were a Goan minister, Mauvin Godinho, and two state legislators.
